Jiazhanong Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P3 (48), Lopingian Epoch

Province:
Xizang (Tibet)

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Jianzhanong in the vicinity of the snowy Xiakangjian Mt. about 120 km to the southeast of Gaizhe County, Tibet. It was named by Li Xingxue, Wu Yimin et al. in 1986.

Lithology and Thickness

Clastics. Composed of grey siltstone, sandstone and micro-conglomerate, intercalated sometimes with coal seams, with a thickness of over 724 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Uncertain contact with the underlying strata. Next older unit in region is the Xiala Fm (middle Permian)

Upper contact

Regional extent

Distributed in a restricted area, being found to occur only in the type section.

Fossils

Abundant plant fossils (phytolites), among which the Pecopteris aff. arcuata and Plagiozamites? oblongifolius should belong to the members of the Cathaysian flora, while the Phyllotheca, Noeggerathiopsis hislopii, etc. represent the members of the Gondwana flora, being possessed of nature of a mixed flora.

Age

Jiang Zhongti et al. (1983) would think that the stratigraphic horizon of the formation is corresponding to the Tuobar Coal Series in the Changdo County, Tibet, belonging to the Lopingian Epoch in age.

Additional Information

Shuzhong Shen et al (2019; Permian integrated stratigraphy and time scale) stratigraphic column has a Mujiucuo Fm of Changhsingian above the Xiala Fm on this Lhasa block region (but not in Permian Lexicon), and do not indicate this Jiazhanong Fm
